A number of these positions are part-time, allowing us to retain a broad complement of professional skills while still meeting budgetary requirements.
Currently without a missionary-in-residence, the gifts of individuals from India, Nagaland, Thailand, Myanmar, South Africa, Czech Republic, Poland and the Gaza Strip enriched us in the recent past. We have also been blessed with a number of gifted interns working toward their degrees in theological fields.
Calvary’s lay leadership includes a Moderator and a Council of Ministries, consisting of leaders from all five ministry areas:
- Care and Congregational Life
- Celebration in Worship
- Communication for Outreach
- Cultivation through Education
- Resource Management
In addition, leaders from the Finance Committee, Nominating Committee and Staff Relations sit on the Council, and several task groups support the above ministries in doing the work of the church.
Programs and activities
Calvary strives to serve others through a variety of local
and global mission activities in addition to providing
relevant programs and activities for members and visitors.
This work is channeled through the ministry areas,
as summarized below.
Care and Congregational Life. Through the sharing
of nurture and compassion, this ministry brings genuine
community to individual members. Stephen ministers
augment pastoral care by providing prayer, companionship
and support via weekly visits to care-receivers. Seniors Ministry volunteers visit with at-homers to keep
them connected with Calvary.
Other programs and
events include, women’s and men’s retreats, Connecting
Point dinners that bring together old and new friends for food and fellowship, the sponsorship of an annual health
fair, and Modern Matures, an energized seniors group
offering monthly luncheon programs and yearly extracurricular
trips. This ministry area also provides support
for baptismal services, bereavement, outreach to new
members, follow-up on absentee members, cards to
those in college or the military and other regular
events in the life of the church.
We recently welcomed six Sudanese families who
choose to worship with us. Our goal is to relate to their
needs and help them reach out to other Sudanese
refugees in the Denver area.
Celebration in Worship. This ministry enables
growth through public and personal worship of God,
creative expression and contemplation. To ensure a
quality worship experience each Sunday, Celebration in
Worship oversees those responsible for the four choirs,
ushers, praise band, communion preparers and servers,
hand bell ringers, soloists, ensembles, children’s sermon
presenters, accompanists and sound technicians. Also
responsible for community outreach through worship,
this ministry coordinates Worship in the Park held twice
each summer, the Easter Sunrise Service at Cherry Creek
State Park and the ecumenical Taizé-style meditation
service held once a month. The Kairos program helps
people connect with a prayer partner for sharing of cares
and concerns as well as making labyrinths—a millenniums-old spiritual tool—available several times a year.
