| Job summary |
The Senior Pastor serves as Calvary’s spiritual leader and chief executive officer, whose singular purpose is to lead the church
toward the fulfillment of its mission |
Essential functions
- Serves as the spiritual leader by:
- Maintaining the spiritual disciplines of prayer, study and reflection
- Conducting public worship, preaching the gospel, and administering the ordinances
- Equipping members, through a ministry of teaching, to live in obedience to God and bear faithful witness to God
- Developing relationships with members, sharing their joys and sorrows
- Ministering to anyone in need as Christian conscience dictates
- Serves as the chief executive officer by:
- Providing visionary leadership, establishing a strategic direction for the church in
conjunction with the Council of Ministries, and ensuring competent fiscal management
- Supervising all activities of the church, in conjunction with the Council of Ministries,
being a member ex officio of all ministries and committees
- Supervising the work of the called members of the pastoral staff., and employing
and supervising the program and administrative staff, in consultation with the
Staff Relations Committee
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the church in fulfilling its mission
- Serves, in consultation with the Moderator, as spokesperson for Calvary to the public
- Represents Calvary globally, nationally, regionally and locally within the American Baptist
Churches USA
Other responsibilities
- Plans and leads staff meetings, including staff development and planning activities
- Meets regularly with lead staff members
- Meets periodically with the Moderator and Chair of Staff Relations
- Coordinates the delivery of pastoral care to the congregation in conjunction with the Pastor of Care and Congregational Life
- Co-leads the Worship Planning Team in conjunction with the Director of Music Ministries

Minimum qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- A master of divinity degree from a graduate theological school accredited by the Association of Theological Schools
- Ten years of full-time experience in ordained ministry preferred, including three years in a multiple-staff setting or a combination of education and experience
- Ordained within and in good standing as a professional church leader with the American Baptist Churches in the USA. (A non-ABC ordained minister in close affinity with the traditions and practices of the ABC USA may be called as Senior Pastor as long as he/she agrees, in writing, with the ABC USA Code of Ministerial Ethics and seeks ABC USA ordination standing promptly following their call to Calvary.)
